Skill games for real money: how they work and how they differ from chance
A skill game for real money is one where the result depends mainly on how well you play rather than on chance, and in which you put up a stake against other players. Being a game of skill does not make it safe or legal everywhere, and there is always a risk of losing your stake. This guide explains how to tell skill games from games of chance and what to check before playing.

What a skill game is
In a skill game, the player who decides better wins most of the time, and that advantage holds when many games are repeated. In a game of chance, by contrast, a random element decides the result, however well you play.
How to tell skill from chance
These questions help you see what kind of game it is:
- Are there random elements, such as dice, shuffled cards or a number generator?
- Is there hidden information you cannot know?
- Do you play against another person or against a house that has a statistical edge?
- If two players of different levels meet many times, does the better one almost always win?
Chess as an example
In chess there are no dice or cards, both players see the same position at all times and the better player wins the vast majority of games against a weaker one. That is why it is considered a clear example of a skill game. On EonChess, you also play against another person and not against a house. We explain it in chess for money: luck or skill.
Skill does not mean no risk
Even when a game is one of skill, you can lose the stake of every game you do not win, and the best players lose games too. The platform's fee also means you need to win a little more than half your games to come out ahead in the long run. Only play with money you can afford to lose.
What the law says
Each country treats these games differently: some distinguish between games of skill and games of chance, and others regulate or ban any game with a stake. We cannot give legal advice: it is your responsibility to check that you are allowed to take part where you live.
What to check before playing
Check who you play against, how much the platform charges, how it detects cheating and how money is withdrawn. The criteria are in how to choose a safe site to play chess for money. If you want to see a skill-based chess option with USDT, read online chess for real money.
For adults aged 18 and over only. Games with a stake may be restricted in some countries.
